Starting point
KSS Energia is a finnish energy company who needed to renew their website. The old website had an outdated look and feel and an information architecture that wasn’t serving the customers well enough.
One of the greatest shortcomings was the lack of e-commerce functionality. There was no way of purchasing electricity contracts online. To make a purchase the customers needed to send a web form which was then handled manually by the sales personnel. This was inefficient and time consuming.
Goal
To redesign the website from scratch, including an enhanced information architecture and e-commerce functionality. The website needed to look modern and fresh and make KSS Energia feel “bigger than it is”.
As a practical goal we needed to provide a platform solution where the client was able to create new contents and pages independently and maintain the website with minimal external aid.
My role
I was responsible for the UX and UI design of the website, collaborating closely with the project team including a Service Designer, a Visual Designer, developers and project management, as well as client stakeholders.
Process
Discovery and definition
The project started with analysing the current state of the website and its performance and discovering the needs of the users and other stakeholders. I worked together with a Service Designer, studying the website analytics and interviewing the key personnel in different business areas. I also did benchmarking of different energy companies’ website.
Design: New site map
Based on the findings from discovery phase I designed the new site map, focusing on the user needs and findability of the most relevant information when organising the contents. The new site structure reflects what the customers are looking for whereas the old website was formed around the company’s organisational structure.
Design: components and layouts
Next, I designed the wireframes of the components and layouts for the different page types. I worked together with another designer who finalised the designs with the visual look used in production, and development who implemented the actual components. This process was agile and we worked iteratively developing and fine tuning the designs along the project.
New feature: e-commerce
To integrate e-commerce to the website I created the purchasing path and wireframes based on requirements defined together with Product Owner and client.
To further help the customers in finding the best electricity contract from many options and contract types that are difficult to compare, I created a helper tool for finding the best contract by answering a few simple questions.
Design guidelines
The website was built in Contentful which allows the client to create the web pages with a relatively high freedom using a set of components we provided. In order to secure a high quality of the design and consistent look and feel throughout the website I held a training session and provided a design guidelines document for the client for independent content creation.
