A network data streaming product that is used for creating and monitoring data streams was cumbersome and slow to use when testing data streams before taking them into use.

The product didn't provide support for testing and users had to use a separate command line interface to test the files. This was a lot of manual work and the test results were not processed in any way. The users had to browse through the result files to locate the errors.

Goal

 

To design an easy to use testing tool as a feature in the product, providing faster testing with minimal effort and few clicks.

My role

 

My responsibility as a UX designer was to find out the pain points of the users, design the new UI and validate it with the users. I conducted the user research and validation together with another UX designer and worked independently on the UI design.

Process

User interviews

We interviewed some internal users to gain better understanding about the testing process and to gather information about their needs for the tool. The interviews revealed several pain points and usability issues with the current tool and a big potential for making the testing process faster and easier with the new tool.

Initial designs and A/B testing

I designed the first versions of the tool in Sketch using the Nokia design system components.

We gathered four internal users and conducted light weight A/B tests with them using InVision mock-ups. Each of the participants was presented with both of the versions but half of them received them in opposite order to decrease the effect of order to the preference.

Iteration of the design

A/B testing produced clear preference for one design that I developed further according to the results of the test and user feedback. I provided detailed specifications of the interaction for the development team.
